What I’ve been reading.

I wanted to write a book review about every book I read in my 101 things in 1001 days challenge but then I read faster than I could sit down and write and I just made it all much bigger in my head and then I just didn’t do it. But at the same time I wanted to write a couple of words about the books. So here are the first five I read. I think I will just try to post every 5 books, at the moment I am on book number 15!

The Night Watch by Sarah Waters 5/5

I’ve wanted to read something by Sarah Waters for a while, I have previously read her novel The Little Stranger and since then I have always thought about reading more of hers.

The Night Watch is set during three different times during World War 2, 1947, 1944 and 1941.

Absolutely loved this book. It stayed with me for a long time. I loved that you basically read the ending before the beginning. I loved all the characters, the setting was so beautifully written. I loved that you already know the ending of the story since you begin at the ending but you are not reading it for the ending but for how it begins.

I couldn’t stop reading it.

I loved all the little details in the book, how they made tea during the wartimes. Sarah Waters is so brilliant in adding these little details into the book without it cluttering the story, or even slowing it down.

Even though there are a lot of characters in the novel the story is very fast paced.

I need to read more of her books, they are just so captivating.

Sleeper’s Case – Barbara Erskine 3/5

It was good but it took me such a long time to read since it wasn’t really captivating. The characters were a bit thin and I just didn’t really enjoy the one dimensional villain. The plot was a bit too drawn-out and I felt like I was just scanning some pages instead of really reading them. But the core of the book was fun, and the writing was gorgeous.

One upon a River – Diane Setterfield 4/5

What I enjoyed about this book was the thin line between realism and fantasy. Which I think suited the place and time of the setting of the book. I did get lost in how some of the characters were connected and how they fitted into the story but it wasn’t that complicated that I didn’t enjoy it.

Elizabeth is Missing – Emma Healey 5/5

I loved this book. It was so beautifully written. It was sad and happy at the same time. I loved how it goes back and forth in time and how the story is intertwined. It is beautifully written and I couldn’t put it down!

Miss Austen – Gill Hornby 3/5

For me the main problem with this book is the source material. It’s just not interesting. You are reading a book about a side character and it was just bland. It didn’t help that several of the characters have the same name and I just didn’t really understand who these people were!

What else should I read? What are you reading at the moment?
