Year in Review: 2019

It has been a hot minute! Hello!

I wanted to write this type of post at the end of 2018, but I seriously couldn’t really remember my year. So instead I decided that every month I would write a couple of words about the month. So this post has been worked on for 12 months!

January was really hard for me. I was trying to stay positive with having lost my job and applying to jobs. But the lack of routine and anxiety of what would happen got me really down. It was very cold and snowy in Reykjavik which was great since it did make everything brighter. Not so great was that I did not want to leave the apartment because of snow.

February was another rough month. I still did not have a job and I was just applying to jobs and getting rejected or the companies simply just not contacting me. On one day I got three rejections. It did not feel great. I did hand in my thesis which was a bag of mixed feelings and I did do some fun things like going to a stand up show and a small concert.

March was a pretty good month! First one of the year! I got a job and started working right away. It was hard trying to balance everything I wanted to do and things got put on hold.

April was great. We spent 10 days in Akureyri and I got a haircut! It was strange being in Akureyri knowing that it was probably the last time visiting before moving there. It made me look at the village in a different way.

May was strange! The first May in a long time when I didn’t have huge projects going on. The month went really fast and I kinda felt as I didn’t accomplish anything.

June was slumpy. I think I realized that I was in an actual slump. I think I had been in a slump for a while but that in June it was obvious that it was quite bad. We celebrated our graduation and invited our parents and close family to a dinner.

July was pure summer month. We took couple of day trips, spent a weekend in the summer house, got a flat tire on a small road in the middle of nowhere.

August was a month of pure madness. I had applied to another job in Akureyri. On the 13th of August they called me and asked if I could come for an interview on the 15th. So we booked a ticket for me and I went to the interview. Then I heard nothing. A couple of days before we moved I got the phone call that I had gotten the job! Hurray! My first day on the job was three days after we moved to Akureyri. Absolute chaos! In this chaos I stopped writing for the blog, I somehow couldn’t wrap my head around everything and also write.

September was just trying to find my way around Akureyri. I don’t know why but this town makes me loose all direction. It doesn’t help that people here use cardinal directions to tell you about places. Let me tell you I don’t know what direction north is, so I do not know where I am going. I made some jam for the first time in a long time and we also DIYed the Strandmon ottoman so that I could store my yarn in it. I started feeling like things were going in the right direction.

October was when autumn turned into winter. I started trying all the coffee houses in Akureyri and found the one with the best coffee (the one in the library). We (and by we I mean not me) started working on getting a new kitchen. Winter hit me hard, I was just not ready for snow and icy roads.

November was a calm month. We started preparing for Christmas. I baked some gingerbread cookies and I did some laufabrauð for the first time since I was a child. It was quite fun and I am happy to add it to my Christmas traditions.

December was magical. We celebrated my birthday by going for a weekend trip to Egilstaðir. It was just what we needed. A cozy hotel with an amazing breakfast. We went to look at different towns in the area and it was just an amazing magical weekend! We were extremely lucky with weather, I think it was the only weekend in December where there wasn’t bad weather!
