As I mentioned in my Month in Review: February post we decided not to watch Netflix in February. By the middle of the month we simultaneously mentioned that we should just cancel the Netflix account. Which we then did.
I used Netflix frequently as an escape from reality. Life is stressful, and instead of dealing with the feelings it was so much easier just to binge on some series. When we got home in the evening it was also quite easy to turn on the TV and aimlessly watch things that we weren’t really interested in.
I would like to mention though that life hasn’t changed just because we cancelled Netflix.

But there are some things that have changed, I have been painting more, reading more, and just generally creating more. Which is what I wanted. I also feel that Árni and I are talking more, we frequently play card games in the evening, which has always been something something we love doing. We bake together and look at recipes instead of sitting on the couch on the phone pretending to watch Netflix.
Also we are more aware of what we are watching. Instead of being unmindful of what media we are consuming we are quite picky of what we want to watch. Instead of just binging on some TV-series that won’t have any impact on us we watch the Icelandic news, Icelandic talk shows, documentaries, and sometimes films.

What I liked about this is that I am more aware of what is happening in the society instead of watching, for example, American comedy series that don’t enrich my life or have any impact on the society around me. By doing so I am also supporting the local media and by that also local artists. I have also noticed that I am listening more to Icelandic radio.
That is it for today! Do you have Netflix? If so, do you ever think of cancelling it?
