Snæfellsnes Road Trip

,

There is a reason why I haven’t posted a lot from the hikes and trips we took this summer in Iceland and the reason is that I don’t know how I wanted to write about these trips. I am not a travel professional, this is not a travel blog, this is not a blog about all the places to visit in Iceland. At the same time, I want to write about my trips because they were fun and I want this blog to be about fun things that I do.

The first weekend in August (also known as Verslunarmannahelgi in Iceland) we decided to go for a road trip around Snæfellsnes and the area around it. We were super lucky with the weather because it was such a rainy summer this year.

Our first stop was Gerðuberg. I have seen basalt columns in other places but these were amazing.

We then stopped at Ytri-Tunga with what felt like hundreds of other people, it was almost impossible to get out of the parking area when we left. Ytri-Tunga is a known place to spot some seals. We were so lucky to spot absolutely zero seals. We think we might have seen one head bopping in the sea but I am not sure if it was a seal or a rock.

Our next stop was Bjarnarfoss, which was very peaceful.

Bjarnafoss

Just after Bjarnafoss is Búðir, which is just a black church and a hotel. It is a beautiful area with a lovely beach and interesting lava.

I think the most disappointing part of the trip was Rauðfeldsgjá. It is beautiful, however, it was just so crowded. There was a queue to go in and out of the ravine and it was too crowded inside. What was interesting about the ravine was that there was still snow in it and the wind coming out of it was cold, much colder than the wind that was outside the ravine.

I didn’t know that Arnarstapi is a small fishing village. The are was gorgeous and it had a cute little harbour. Close by was also Gatklettur, I think I could have looked at Gatklettur forever. It was just indescribable beautiful and the sound from the waves hitting the rocks was soothing.

Lóndrangar was also a place that was magical to see. It was strange looking out to the ocean knowing there is nothing out there. Just more ocean, and then Brazil.

Öndverðanes was probably my favourite area of the trip. It was just so peaceful. The road getting there was very bad and I think most of the tourist we saw at the other places either didn’t trust themselves to drive to the area or didn’t want to go so far away from the main road. The main attraction was, of course, Öndverðanes viti and it was gorgeous, it isn’t often you see such a neon coloured house.

When I go back to Snæfellsnes I would definitely return to Arnarstapi and Öndverðanes. I might want to go back to Ytri-Tunga and see some seals but at the same time, I could simply go to some of the other places to see them. I have also seen some in Reykjavik so it isn’t like it is super rare to see them in Iceland. I am not sure if I would visit many of the other places,  especially Rauðfeldsgjá since it was just too crowded!

That was the first day of the trip, the second day will go up later!
