Knitting Astrid: The Beginning

I haven’t been writing about the things I have been knitting. I am not sure why, I just haven’t been happy about everything. I also decided to take a knitting break. When I moved back to Iceland for the summer I decided to not to keep any of the yarn that I had. I just felt that I kept on trying to use that yarn for something without it inspiring me. That was the first part of the knitting break, the second part was simply not knitting at all. For the past 50 days I have not knitted anything, and I started missing it. Which is why I think taking a knitting break was the right thing, I am now even more excited to start knitting again.

Knitting Astrid Lopapeysa (2)

Last summer I stumbled up on this sweater pattern when I was browsing though all of the Icelandic knitting magazine my aunt has. I immediately fell in love. But at that time I was moving to Helsinki and I simply did not have time to start on it.

Every since that day I have been dreaming about that sweater, and today is the day I will start knitting it! Here is the thing, even though I am Icelandic I have never knitted a lopapeysa before, I have knitted sweaters but never from a pattern.

I had been debating what colours I was going to use but I really liked the colour combo it came in originally so I went for that. The yarn I will be using is Álafoss Lopi and the colours I chose were:

  • Colour 9958 (light indigo)
  • Colour 0054 (light ash heather)
  • Colour 0709 (midnight blue)
  • Colour 9969 (fuchsia heather)
  • Colour 9965 (chartreuse green heather)
  • Colour 9959 (indigo)

The needles I will be using are:

  • 6 mm circular needles 40 and 80 cm
  • 4½ mm circular needles 40 and 80 cm
  • 4½ mm and 6 mm double pointed needles

I plan on doing weekly updates here on the blog and then I will also post some pictures of the process on my instagram.

Until next time, and happy knitting.

  1. […] It has been a week since I started knitting my Astrid lopapeysa, and I have been enjoying it tremendously. As I mentioned last week I took a knitting break and it was great to start again. […]
