Spring has finally arrived in Helsinki! FINALLY!
And it has been absolutely lovely. I could feel the last remnants of the winter just melt away as the ice on the ocean melted away. Spirits were lifted and then crushed by the sheer workload of finishing all the classes.
There were couple of downsides to that.
Firstly, the pollution has be really bad here, the cars are still on their studded winter tires and with all the stones everywhere there has basically always been dust in my teeth.
The other part was that since the semester is almost finished I have a lot of essays I need to hand in. So I spent many hours looking longingly at the blue sky outside my window.

I went to a new sauna this month! Making it the 3rd new sauna I have been to this year and the last one until I come back to Helsinki. I also started packing since I will head back to Iceland for the summer in a week or so.
On 30th of April we celebrated Vappu. Which was an experience! Luckily it was beautiful weather. We had a picnic, drank some champagne, eat some doughnuts and I saw Havis Amanda get her hat. It was definitely something worth experiencing and I am glad that I managed to do so, and I am especially happy I did manage to experience that as a student here in Helsinki. It did give the festivities an extra boost and it was just lovely.
Goals for May
- Start knitting my lopapeysa
- Hand in all school assignments
- Read one book (that is not related to my thesis)
- Plant tomatoes and salad
- Hike up one mountain
Films I have watched this month:
I am a tiny bit ashamed of how many films I have been watching this month, but it is a nice way to relax and it has been a stressful month!
The Bodyguard: watched it for the first time and I was amazing! Whitney Houston was just stunning and I will definitely watch this one again!
Cruel Intentions: I hadn’t seen it since I was a teen and when I now re-watched it I just realized how problematic it is. I don’t think it has aged well.
Love Happens: I had seen this one before and I was as underwhelmed this time around. I just needed something to watch to relax.
Rumor Has It: this one was even worse than Love Happens. Don’t sleep with people that have slept with your grandmother and mother and that you might think is your dad. A simple rule to live by.
A Good Year: not the first time I have watched this one and not the last time either.
Going in Style: I liked it. Wasn’t sure why Michael Caine was in it with very distinct British accent. Did he move to the US as a young man?
Laws of Attraction: so bad! SO BAD! It had all the things I dislike about romantic comedies. The idea that a woman has to be almost ruined by a man and then she will love him. Not good at all!
Cinderella: This was the live action film from 2015 and it was beautiful! I did really enjoy the plot of the film. Was a bit disappointed that no one died in the end.
Pocahontas: I was expecting more from Pocahontas, I think that probably stems from an amazing Native North-American Literature class that I went to last semester so I was expecting more of that type of storytelling. And I kept on thinking about if people were happy with how this film portrayed Natives and if it was a positive film or not.
