I think it has been established that I enjoy sweets and since we finally have some good summer weather here in Reykjavík it is the best time to write about some Icelandic ice cream.
Bragðarefur is something that is quite popular here in Iceland and even though the name is complicated the ice cream itself is not. How it works is that you choose a size (always choose small, these things are ginormous) and three different type of candy/fruit or other options that they have. It is similar to McDonald’s McFlurry and Dairy Queen’s Blizzard.

The two ice cream places I went to this time around both serve their own ice cream blend. Ísbúð Vesturbæjar is from 1971 (according to their Facebook page) and is in four different locations. I always go to the one at Hagamelur, it is the original ice cream shop and in desperate need of some renovation. There are some seats there but since the queue is really long there is no space to sit down. They don’t call it Bragðarefur but Þeytingur, but I always forget about that (and so do most other people in the queue) and I always ask for Bragðarefur.

The other place I went and is quickly becoming my favorite ice cream place is Arna – ís og kaffibar. Arna is a lactose-free dairy plant that is in Bolungarvík. They sell things such as lactose-free skyr and yogurt in the regular supermarkets and ice cream in their ice cream / coffee house in Eiðsgrandi. And let me tell you, their ice cream is AMAZING! I highly recommend it and actually recommend it to regularly to people that are around me.

I try to choose a different mixture every time I go and get a bragðarefur so I thought it might be fun to share what I ordered.
Ísbúð Vesturbæjar (1100kr/small): the new ice cream with blueberries, Bounty, and Toblerone chunks.
Arna (990kr/small): Vanilla ice cream with shredded coconuts, smarties, and chocolate licorice.
Thanks for reading.
Katrin
