Icelandic Candy: Nói Síríus Chocolate

I like chocolate. Well, this is an understatement, I love chocolate. So I decided to take on the hard task to rate the ten different chocolate bars that Nói Síríus produces that are part of their Rjómasúkkulaði range.

Couple of things before I start the rating, never pay more than 300kr for these! Never! Even in Hagkaup they are around 300kr, I did see them for over 500kr in a unnamed shop and that is just wrong!

But back to chocolate!Nói Siríus Kremkex Rjómasúkkulaði.jpg

10. Kremkex 140gr (Cookies and Cream)

This was a new addition last summer and I can’t say it is my favorite one (which is why it is in the last place). Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t taste bad. It has the crunch of the chocolate cookie but it is just too sweet, almost sickly. It might be also that I’m not a huge fan of Oreo cookies. All in all, this one is my least favorite.

9. Rjómasúkkulaði 150gr (Milk chocolate)

The basic, it is good but not as good as the other ones they have. I like it for baking and hot chocolate once in awhile but I rarely buy it. It’s missing the pizzazz that the other ones have.

8. Appelsínubragð og stökkt kröns 150gr (Orange flavor and rice crunch)

I’m not a fan of orange flavored chocolate so this one is rated low. What does save it though is the rice crunch. I think if you like orange flavored chocolate you’ll like this one. I am not a huge fan of the name of this chocolate because “kröns” isn’t a good word. It is basically how you would write “crunch” with icelandic pronunciation and letters. We should be better than that!

56 Dökkt rjómasúkkulaði.jpg

7.  56% Dökkt 150gr (56% dark)

This one is new and it is fine. However, Nói already has suðusúkkulaði (cooking chocolate) that I find better than the 56%. This was the first time I bought it and I’m guessing it is probably the last time as well. It just didn’t do much for me, it isn’t as delicious as many other dark chocolates.

6. Hrískúlur 150gr (Rice Krispies)

I really like this one, the Rice Krispies don’t really give much extra taste but it really helps with the crunch and the crunch is good. It doesn’t really stand out from the others since it is a very simple chocolate. But sometimes you crave a simple chocolate and then this one is the perfect one.

5. Heslihnetu 150gr (Hazelnut)

What I like about the hazelnuts is that they are chopped, so they really do blend well with the chocolate. There is a good ratio between chocolate and nuts.

4. Rúsínur 150gr (Raisins)

This one is really really good! The raisin and chocolate ratio is just perfect. If you enjoy chocolate covered raisins you should definitely try the chocolate covered raisins from Nói they are delicious.

3. Heslihnetur og rúsínur 150gr (Hazelnuts and raisins)

This one has been my favorite since I was a child, it is just SO GOOD! It is a classic! It has the nuts, the raisins and the chocolate. What more do you want?

2. Karmellukurl og íslenskt sjávarsalt 150gr (Toffee and Icelandic sea salt)

This chocolate came out last summer (with the cream and cookie one) and I fell madly in love with it. It has crunchy toffee and salt flakes that just blend beautifully with the chocolate. Absolutely gorgeous. A word of warning though, it is quite rough in texture, so if you eat too much of it it can scrape up your mouth a bit.

1.  Saltlakkrísflögur og sjávarsalt 140 gr (salty liquorice flakes and sea salt)

The perfect mixture of salty and sweet! The salty liquorice flakes are crunchy and explode with flavor. This is a brand new chocolate that was introduced earlier this summer and I have been eating too many of these! I just can’t help myself. As a Swiss person I just have to say, this is the greatest chocolate I have ever tasted. I hope I don’t have to return my Swiss passport next time I go back. But it has to come with a warning since it has liquorice, some people do not know what they are missing by disliking it.

That is it from the chocolate journalist.
